AI Tools for Earth and Space Science Investigations

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH  AT 7:00 – 8:00 PM EASTERN TIME

   Presenter: Peg Steffen

Editor, The Earth Scientist,  National Earth Science Teachers Association

AI focuses on creating systems that learn from vast amounts of data, identifying patterns to make predictions or decisions without being explicitly programmed for every scenario. It is used every day in navigation apps like Google Maps, personalized recommendations on shopping sites, spam filters in your email, and virtual assistants. Become a more effective user of these tools to help students investigate Earth and Space science topics and phenomena. Students of any age can become the drivers of their learning by writing effective prompts that harness the capabilities of AI. Simple tools developed through the Iowa Conservation Game Jam help students document their knowledge, track prompts and design follow-up queries.  In addition, students need to understand that AI can generate false information so they should validate any AI-generated responses against conventional academic sources that are scientifically accurate. After a short presentation about several AI tools, join other colleagues in breakout rooms to discuss your ideas about using (or not using) AI in your classroom.
