Earth Science Week 2019 Collection
In 2019, Earth Science Week is October 13th to 19th and has as its theme, "Geoscience is for Everyone." Every Day of Earth Science Week, sponsored by the American Geosciences Institute (AGI), has a special focus. NESTA is highlighting a key resource or resource collection each day. On Saturday, October 19, 2019 join us for an end-of-week, virtual, celebration sharing what NESTA has done this past year and find out how you can become more involved in NESTA.

Focus Days
Sunday, October 13: International Earthcache DayAn EarthCache provides an earth science lesson through a visit to a unique geological feature. The description and tasks should combine to teach an earth science lesson. Highlight what is unique or interesting about the location. Write in your own words and acknowledge your sources. Check out this resource to help you create an EarthCache.
Monday, October 14: Earth Science Literacy DayScience literacy is important for today's society, especially since our environment is changing in many ways. "Telling stories to children does not teach them how to read a book, and telling facts, laws, or principles does not teach students to read the stories written in the earth and sky. Learning to Read the Earth and Sky, an NSTA Press book, explores the doing of earth science—how we read the stories written in the earth by applying the practices of science." The Introduction and Chapter 4 are available for free preview.
Tuesday, October 15: No Child Left Inside Day and Earth Observation DayIn today's world too many people have no connection with nature like our ancestors had. The Mosquito Habitat Mapper gives you and your students the excuse to get out of the classroom and connect with your surroundings. With this free app, you and your students can locate, identify, and photograph mosquito breeding sites in your community. Then sample and determine whether the larvae you find could potentially mature into vectors of mosquito borne disease and reduce the risk of disease by dumping water containers and monitoring the environment. Submit mosquito observations through the GLOBE Observer app and contribute to scientific research. This app is part of the larger GLOBE Mission Mosquito project that provides webinars for educators and citizen scientists. Be sure to check out the Zika Zine that tells the story of three Aedes mosquitoes and the Zika virus within them.
Wednesday, October 16: National Fossil DayThe goal of the Digital Atlas of Ancient Life project from the Paleontological Research Institution is to help you identify fossils from particular regions and time periods, and better understand Earth's ancient life. Several Digital Atlas websites are now online.
Thursday, October 17: Geoscience for Everyone DayScience is a human endeavor. As a result, the history of science is punctuated by stories of human triumph at its greatest, and stories of ignorance and repression at its worst. The stories found within the careers of women paleontologists throughout the history of the discipline contain both. Share the Daring to Dig website from Paleontological Research Institution with your students.
Friday, October 18: Geologic Map DayIn honor of Geologic Map Day, we suggest you check out this activity, Grand Canyon Cross Section Lab. Students examine a geologic map of the Grand Canyon and two imaginary vertical cores through canyon stratigraphy. They use these data to construct a cross-section across the canyon and to answer questions about the geology of the Grand Canyon.
Saturday, October 19: International Archaeology DayProject Archaeology is an educational organization dedicated to teaching scientific and historical inquiry, cultural understanding, and the importance of protecting our nation's rich cultural resources. They are a national network of archaeologists, educators, and concerned citizens working to make archaeology education accessible to students and teachers nationwide through high-quality educational materials and professional development.
