All About Mining -- Total Concept of the Mining Industry, a Summer Course for K-12 Teachers
An intensive, yet fun, summer training course that provides K-12 teachers of all disciplines with a comprehensive overview of all phases of the minerals, aggregates, industrial minerals, and solid fuels industries. During the past 41 years, 1,493 teachers have completed this flagship course at the Colorado School of Mines. Approximately 75 authorities from industry, academia, private groups, and government, lecture on their respective fields of expertise, beginning with basic geology and plate tectonics, and continuing through geophysics, exploration, mining methods, metallurgical operations, metal applications, research, marketing, careers, economics, recycling, and environmental responsibility. Ten half-days of classroom instruction are supported with a one-day geology trip plus eight full days of field trips to operating mines and associated plants in Colorado. Some financial assistance is available for non-Colorado applicants who apply early in the year. Six hours of recertification credit is awarded at the completion of the course.
