NESTA is an organization run by member volunteers for our members and others. We consider it an important part of our professional responsibilities as Earth Science Educators to share our time and expertise on appropriate occasions to help colleagues and promote our field. Participation as a NESTA volunteer brings opportunities for demonstrating leadership potential at the national level, and is a good way to further your development as a professional. NESTA seeks to expand its outreach as widely as possible to benefit our members, their students, and society. Our growth depends on the volunteer efforts of our leadership and our members.
NESTA needs volunteers for numerous projects. There are, of course, varying degrees of commitment, ranging from the extensive time required to serve as an Elected or Appointed Officer to spending a couple of hours at the NESTA booth during a convention.
“Easy” ways you can volunteer to help NESTA include: sending a message to the President expressing your opinion or making a suggestion for something NESTA should do; presenting at a Share-a-thon; providing specimens and support at a Rock Raffle, distributing NESTA materials to colleagues in your school or at a state or local conference; writing an article about an effective activity or resource for The Earth Scientist; and/or representing NESTA at our booth during an NSTA or other conference. On a slightly higher level, we appreciate the efforts of our members who step forward to serve as a NESTA State Contact, and still need help in some states and provinces.
Of course, the highest level of volunteering involves running for one of our elected offices (Regional Director, Secretary, Treasurer, or President-Elect) and, if successful, help guide NESTA’s future. But we also need members to serve in Appointed Officer positions such as Editors of our publications, Committee Chairs and members, special Coordinators and Advisors.
Please respond to calls for volunteers when we get the word out to membership through email, NESTA E-News, The Earth Scientist, and other venues.
